Let’s Sell News, Not Newspapers

I am reading the September issue of Wired, which is not yet online, and came across this quote from Dave Kusek, co-author of The Future of Music:

“The labels were never in the business of selling music. They were in the business of selling plastic discs.”

Of course, one could probably say the same thing about newspapers. They were, or at least are now, not in the business of selling news, they are in the business of selling newspapers.

Just like in the music industry, where the entrepreneurs are extracting the music from the plastic at a much lower cost, so might entrepreneurs find ways to extract the pure news from all the costly packaging. If so, maybe Jay Rosen is on to something.
