Jarvis: Wake Up Journalists, Think Solo
Just after writing the previous post in which Geneva Overholser tells journalist to think big, I read Jeff Jarvis telling journalists to go independent and then become networked with mainstream companies. Jarvis takes his cue from this:
Shane Richmond of The Telegraph profiles a sports writer who was laid off from his paper and set out on his own: the stand-alone journalist.
I like the networked concept, but let’s take it further. Every news organization should think of becoming networked with everyone who fines their product appealing. That networking will take many forms from the highly productive solo journalist to people who occasionally are asked to click on this item or that.
Take this post for example. As you read it there is a synaptic network formed whether you recognize it or not. You and I have just formed a mental connection, my ideas become a part of your network of ideas. News organizations must recognize that connection, help their audiences understand it and develop those connections to everyone’s advantage.
