.. it’s a process of developing trust with the people I write about and who are interested in the industry I write about. I broke the story because several sources (anonymous and ones I knew) leaked the information to me. Other sources that trusted me from years of reporting were willing to confirm the news. Cometa said I was the first reporter they spoke to because they knew that whatever I wrote, it would be in context and informed by the years I’ve spent writing on the subject. Part of the reason that I’m able to break some of these stories is that the advertising revenue for my site is now high enough that I can afford to be obsessive about the field in the way a general or trade reporter on salary cannot.
