Andrea Frantz, Innovative Professor

When I heard that Andrea Frantz, a communication professor at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was taking her journalism class into the community as part of a civic journalism project, I thought we have to blog that here. But Frantz gave such comprehensive answers to my questions that I decided to use her piece to launch an occasional series called Innovations in Teaching.

To see how it works, just read Frantz’s piece. She writes in part:

to effectively “put our money where our mouths are,” our civic journalism focus in the spring 2004 Advanced News course required a careful investigation into the challenges and needs facing the community of Wilkes-Barre and to eventually also offer solutions to those challenges using local media outlets.

It’s an amazing course, and you will see that Frantz is a super energetic as well as innovative teacher. She even includes a powerpoint.

Frantz’s inaugural piece will give you an idea of what the Innovations in Teaching pages will look like.

Are you teaching an innovative course that touches on public journalism, citizens media, blogging or journalism in general? Want to share your ideas with a larger audience of journalists, students and teachers? Here is the place. Just contact me.

We are flexible on format.
