Gillmor: An OhMyNews Could Have USA Success

Dan Gillmor, of the San Jose Mercury, thinks something like South Korea’s participatory OhMyNews could succeed in the USA. He is quoted in a Guardian Unlimited online article about OhMyNews and its founder Oh Yeon Ho, saying, “I admire what Mr Oh and his colleagues have accomplished.”

“And while the conditions are different in the US, including the overwhelming number of personal journalism sites (blogs, etc) that have already sprung up, I do believe an OhmyNews-like operation could succeed here.”

One motivational factor is explained by Jean K Min, director of the new international division. Min says, “One reason why people write for us is that they can get huge numbers of eyeballs, sometimes 100,000 clicks for a single story…If you want to make your name, this is the place!”

The Bakersfield Califorian is trying its own experiment at the Northwest Voice, under publisher Mary Lou Fulton.
