Want Open Source Funding? Think Atom Bomb

This from Smart Mobs: John Langford, an AI researcher at University of Chicago, compares the methods of cooperation of academia and open source programmers, and points to differences where each could learn from the other.

On similarities he writes:

Much of academia is a “gift culture”: whoever gives the most is most respected.

About why academics are better funded he writes:

…governments will start funding open source programming more seriously if they produce an equivalent (with respect to societal impact) of the atom bomb.
