Open Cola: Make Your Own or Die Trying

As I try to learn more about open source and how it might be applied to the saving journalism, I have been reading the book How Open Is the Future? edited by Marleen Wynants & Jan Cornelis. In it they talk about all kinds of open source projects, including OpenCola.

Wow, I thought, of course, if enough people worked on it, sure why couldn’t a new improved cola be made. Then I came across a site that gave instructions, but warned that trying to make cola is likely to kill you. The oils can burn your skin, the acids can blind you and putting in too much caffeine can kill you. Then I wondered if maybe Coke wrote it to scare people away. Well, it scared me away. It seems some open source ideas have to be left to professionals.
