SpartanEdge: Is It Campus Journalism’s Future?
SpartanEdge’s tagline is The Future of Online Campus News Is Now, and its “about us” statement says:
SpartanEdge.com is an online campus newspaper that serves the Michigan State University community. Instructor Bonnie Bucqueroux and a team of students from her JRN 108 – Introduction to Mass Media class fall semester 2005 have created this new entity, which we hope will push the envelope of online journalism as far as it will go.
And this alternative to the mainstream campus paper is pushing the envelop. A story in the Lansing City Pulse says in part:
The site hosts more than 20 blogs, with titles ranging from “Ron the Weather Blogger” to “Ask Dr. Sex” to “A Homosexual sets it straight.”
The most controversial (and as such, popular) rhetoric is spun by the “Spartanette” blog, from the mind of outspoken standup comedian and MSU student Rachel Wilkerson, who serves as SpartanEdge’s managing editor.
The site is edgy and might indeed be the campus online news of the future. Here’s its manifesto.
