Bike Riding and WiFi Thoughts
I went for a nice 46-mile bike ride today on the Silver Comet Trail in Cobb County, Georgia. Its a rails to trails project, which eventually will go all the way to Alabama. Its always filled with people, plus now lots of new housing development are being built adjacent to it. The trail is, of course, free. In truth its a mini-recreational highway. It cost $13.5 million to build or about $350,000 a mile and more goes into maintenance and improvements.
When I got home, I thought I would try my little experiment to see if one could find wireless connections on the Marietta Town Square as I promised yesterday.
It looked good for a while. My computer was picking up a weak single. So then I roved around, but could not connect. Then in front of the Australian Bakery Café and Eddies Trick Shop, my WiFi indicator went green. I thought wonderful, Ill send out a blog right from here. But alas no luck. The signal was there, but apparently it was not free for all.
However, if you can build and maintain free highways for work and free trails for recreation, why not free access to the information highway. In the next few days I will try to get a handle on what free wireless on Marietta’s Town Square would cost. Of course, we all know the cost will be a lot less than those hard surface roads we travel each day, and this virtual highway will take us a lot farther a lot faster.
