Group Dedicated to Social Network Analysis
Interested in the science of Social Networking? Then go to the International Network for Social Network Analysis. Interested in anecdotal information on the power and benefits of social networking? Then read on.
Dan Gillmor writes that he is not blown away with whats happening in the social networking sites. I agree. Tom Mangan invited me into Orkut.
My appraisal: Maybe people are falling in love with each other, but not with each others ideas.
Later I noticed one comment to Gillmors “not blown away” post, saying it’s because:
you’ve already got a social network. it’s this blog. plus, you’re also a highly connected individual. the value proposition seems low for you, i think.
As it turns out the commentator is Shayne Bowman of We Media fame. Thanks to our individual blogs, Bowman and I have meet face to face as I have with Gillmor
I also keep in touch off and on with Mangan, although we have never met. My other new face-to-face meetings thanks to this site include Harvard fellow Rebecca MacKinnon and master blogger Jeff Jarvis. And they have been more than meet and greet encounters. Thanks to the blogging connections three of the people are actively helping me put on the August 3 conference in Toronto and another has asked me to review some of his writings. This is the building of true Social Capital.
Of course, as we build these social networks we are learning at the same time. Today after reading Bowman and Gillmor and their links I then found my way to this page that gave a quick overview to Social Network Analysis and finally to the International Network for Social Network Analysis, which is going to be a big help for projects I want to do.
These blogs are powerful tools, and I am always amazed when people write them off as some passing fade used by the chattering class.
